Left: The roman triumphal arch (3th century AD), on the south edge of the lower city of Anazarbus.

This monument, with its three passages, is unique in Cilicia. It was situated close to the city walls (a glimpse of it is shown on the right half of the picture) and to the south city gate, of which nothing remains.

During a 2008 visit not very much was visible of ancient Anazarbus, with the exception of the fine triumphal arch. It seems a lot more has been excavated since.

We are standing in the outer bailey of Anavarza’s upper city (called ‘basse cour’, which is French for ‘Lower courtyard’) and looking towards the North. On the left: the ruins of the burial church of the Armenian kings.

In the background: the inner fortress (or keep), separated from the outer bailey by a ravine, that was defended by an impressive bastion.

One of a series of pictures taken during a visit from end to end. The location is imported later, and only at some pictures, I use the centre of a picture as the spot to locate, and not the spot where a picture was taken (the more usual method). Descriptions are based on sources such as: ‘Guides Bleus: Turquie’ – Edition 1986 , ‘Guide Fodor: Turquie’ - Edition 1988 & Personal Visits (by a correspondent of the author in 1985-1999).

In the foreground: A segment of the walls of Anavarza’s upper city (on top of the mountain ridge). Byzantine-Armenian work (but predominantly Armenian) from the 12th and 13th centuries.

They enclosed a space called ‘basse cour’ (French for ‘Lower courtyard’, meaning the outer bailey), which measures about 370 x 210 m. In the background: The inner fortress (or keep) lies to the north, is about 270 x 60 m large and is separated from the outer bailey by a ravine, that was defended by an impressive bastion.
